ABOUT 'SWITCH'
SWITCH stands for Sitting With Interruption for Total Cardiovascular Health. There is strong evidence for the association between sedentary behaviors and cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease and stroke. This NIH-funded study will identify and test the physiological effects and feasibility of a multi-level strategy for reducing sedentary behavior. Long-term, our findings will inform a large clinical trial that can test whether sedentary behavior reduction can decrease cardiovascular disease risk.

Do you sit too much at work or home? Did you know that there is strong evidence for an association between sitting and cardiovascular diseases coronary heart disease and stroke? As part of a National Institutes of Health-funded study, the CML team are seeking to determine a physiological sound and feasible strategy for breaking-up prolonged sitting. Long-term, our findings will inform a large clinical trial that can test whether sedentary behavior reduction can decrease cardiovascular disease risk
To be able to take part in the study, individuals must be:
If you would like to take part in the study, you would be required to visit the Cardiometabolic Laboratory at UNC, Chapel Hill on six occasions:
Prior to attending visits 2-5, you will have to perform the following:
The total time commitment that will be required from you is approximately 25 minutes. For visits 2-6 we will compensate you with a $120 gift card (up to $600). Following the analysis of your data, will happily provide a summary of your results in comparison to the group means.
If you are interested in participating or have any questions about the study, please contact Alex Pomeroy via; Email: [email protected] or Tel: (585) 545-5563.
To be able to take part in the study, individuals must be:
- Aged 36 to 55 years
- Free of cardiovascular disease
- Non-smokers
- Inactive (<90 minutes exercise per week)
- Sedentary (sitting for 8 hours or more each day).
If you would like to take part in the study, you would be required to visit the Cardiometabolic Laboratory at UNC, Chapel Hill on six occasions:
- Visit 1 - The first visit will be a familiarization session during which all experimental procedures will be described to you in full (approx. 1 hour).
- Visits 2-5 - at each visit, we will first collect a blood sample and then take some noninvasive measurements related to blood pressure and blood flow. We will then feed you a standard breakfast, followed by additional measurements. You will then be asked to sit for 4 hours while watching a television program but remaining still. For one of the visits, you will sit the whole period. For three of the visits, we will break-up your sitting by asking you to stand and/or walk. At the end of the 4-hour period, we will repeat the measurements.
- Visit 6 - we will ask you to return to attend a 90-minute focus group, so we can ask you questions about the different strategies used to break up sitting.
Prior to attending visits 2-5, you will have to perform the following:
- Refrain from vigorous exercise for a period of 48 hours prior, with a period of no exercise 12 hours prior.
- Consume nothing but water for a period of 12 hours prior
- Avoid consuming alcohol for 12 hours prior.
The total time commitment that will be required from you is approximately 25 minutes. For visits 2-6 we will compensate you with a $120 gift card (up to $600). Following the analysis of your data, will happily provide a summary of your results in comparison to the group means.
